Employer requirements — what the company must prepare
Registered capital:M paid-up per foreign hire (M if applicant is married to a Thai citizen). BOI companies are exempt. Thai-to-foreign ratio: 4 Thais per foreigner — also waived for BOI. Company docs: Certificate of Incorporation (≤6 months old), VAT registration (Por.Por.20), latest financial statements, social-security list with 4+ Thai employees.
New companies: must operate at least one accounting cycle (typically 6–12 months) before hiring foreigners — except BOI-approved companies, which can apply immediately.
End-to-end: from overseas to holding the Work Permit
Step 1: company files WP3 pre-approval at Ministry of Labour — 7–10 days. Step 2: applicant uses WP3 to obtain Non-B Visa at a Thai embassy abroad (single 90 days). Step 3: enter Thailand. Step 4: within first 30 days, file Work Permit at Department of Employment — blue book issued in 3–7 days. Step 5: extend Visa to 1 year at Immigration (operating capital + tax). Step 6: 90-day report + annual renewal.
Reserved occupations and exceptions
Royal Decree 1979 (revised 2020) reserves 27 occupations for Thai nationals — retail sales, hairdressing, construction, driving, accounting (in part), civil engineering, architecture, etc. Foreigners may only hold managerial, advisory, specialist, or non-restricted positions.
Exceptions: BOI, Representative Offices, Regional Operating HQ (ROH), Smart Visa, LTR Visa have special privileges and are not bound by the standard rules.

2. Secure the correct visa status
Obtain or convert to a Non-Immigrant B visa before lodging the permit application.

4. Lodge and collect the permit
The complete file is submitted and the permit book collected on approval.
Handled by: Our team · Typical time: 7–10 business days
Overall timeframe: From a standing start, allow 3–6 weeks including visa steps and document legalisation. Renewals for an unchanged role and employer are considerably faster.
Documents to prepare first
Passport with a valid Non-Immigrant B visa
Tourist and visa-exempt entries cannot be converted at the work permit stage
Degree certificate and transcripts
Translated and legalised where issued outside Thailand
Employment references or experience certificates
Supporting the qualification for the specific position
Company registration documents and financial statements
Recent copies certified by an authorised director
Medical certificate and photographs
Issued to the current Department of Employment specification
Advisory tips
Align the job title on the permit with the actual duties — mismatches cause problems at renewal and inspection
Keep the 90-day reporting and visa extension calendar together with the permit dates
Legalise foreign qualifications before arrival where possible; it is slower to arrange afterwards
Why files get rejected
Working before the permit is issued is an offence for both employee and employer
Changing employer requires a new permit, not an amendment
Some occupations remain reserved for Thai nationals and cannot be permitted at all
