Apostille Thailand

Using a Thai document overseas before 28 February 2027? Do not commission work on the assumption that a Thai Convention Apostille is available today. First obtain the recipient’s instructions, then establish whether translation, signature certification or legalisation is required.

Accession is not the same as entry into force

HCCH announced Thailand’s deposit of its instrument of accession on 30 June 2026, with entry into force scheduled for 28 February 2027. This page was checked on 7 October 2026: it concerns preparation and route assessment, not an announcement that Thailand issues Convention Apostilles today.

Your submission date changes the questions to ask

For submission before entry into force, get the recipient’s certification instructions in writing. A consular or embassy route may be relevant, but some recipients request an original or a certified copy without the same chain. The purpose and recipient matter more than a generic list of countries.

For submission after 28 February 2027, check whether the Convention operates between Thailand and the country where the document will be used. Review the HCCH status table and Article 12 objections: membership of both countries does not by itself establish treaty operation between them.

Before an actual application, recheck official Thai competent-authority notices for filing locations, accepted formats, fees and processing arrangements. A treaty date on a website is not evidence that a particular office is accepting a particular application.

What an Apostille certifies—and what it does not

Under Article 5, an Apostille certifies the authenticity of a signature, the capacity in which the signer acted and, where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp. It does not certify the truth of the document’s contents, approve a visa, recognise an academic qualification or make a contract automatically acceptable.

Where the Convention applies, the Apostille replaces the legalisation formality it abolishes. A recipient may still impose separate requirements about the document’s content, age, translation and translator qualifications. Check those requirements before paying for authentication.

Birth records, degrees and company papers need different checks

Civil-status records: identify the version issued by the registrar and check spelling against the passport. If a receiving registry requests a recent extract or a specific format, obtain its instructions before translating. There is no single document-age rule for every overseas use.

Academic documents: ask whether the recipient wants an original, university verification or direct transmission from the institution. Signature authentication does not evaluate equivalence of qualifications and cannot replace an admissions office’s delivery requirements.

Corporate documents: distinguish a registrar-issued company record from a privately signed power of attorney or board resolution. Confirm signatory authority and the bank’s or counterparty’s instructions. A printout of a digital record may not be treated like its verifiable electronic original.

Convention exclusions are important for commercial documents

Article 1 excludes documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents and administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations. Do not assume that every invoice or certificate of origin qualifies for an Apostille; establish the nature of the document and the applicable route.

A private bank letter or contract does not become a public document merely because it will be used abroad. Determine which signature or certification is to be authenticated and whether the competent authority can authenticate it. Adding a notarial certificate is not a universal solution.

Translation order and foreign-issued originals

Ask whether translation comes before or after authentication, whether the Apostille itself must be translated and who may translate for the recipient. An English translation may be insufficient for a foreign authority with local-language or accredited-translator requirements.

For an original issued outside Thailand, start with the competent authority in its country of origin. Being in Bangkok does not allow Thai authorities to issue Apostilles for every foreign original. Certifying a copy in Thailand is a different act whose acceptability must be confirmed by the recipient.

Plan to the recipient’s deadline, not a rush-service label

Separate document review, obtaining replacement records, translation, signature checks, official processing and delivery. Tell the service provider when the recipient must receive the documents, rather than only when you want them dispatched. Urgency cannot change the treaty’s start date or an authority’s processing arrangements.

Request a written scope and a breakdown of professional charges, government fees, translation and shipping. Ask what happens if the recipient changes its instructions. This page offers no starting-price claim, fixed completion time or guarantee of acceptance.

Six details for a document-specific assessment

  1. Issuing country and the issuing authority or signer
  2. Destination country, receiving institution and purpose
  3. Relevant document pages, reverse sides and attachments; redact unnecessary personal information
  4. Recipient instructions or forms, especially original-document and translator requirements
  5. The recipient’s receipt deadline and accepted delivery method
  6. Any existing translation, signature or certification, and whether the recipient accepts it

Questions before arranging certification

Can I obtain a Thai Apostille within 24 hours now?

As of this page’s 7 October 2026 review, the Convention has not entered into force for Thailand. Do not rely on an offer claiming that Thai Convention Apostilles are already available. For urgent use, check the route your recipient accepts today. No 24-hour completion is promised here.

Will embassy legalisation still be needed after February 2027?

An Apostille replaces the legalisation formality abolished by the Convention when treaty operation, document scope and requirements are satisfied. Documents outside its scope, countries between which it does not operate and separate recipient requirements need their own assessment.

Is a scan enough to start?

A scan can support preliminary review, but does not establish what can be filed with an authority. The recipient may require an original, a registrar’s extract or a verifiable electronic record. Agree the final format before sending original documents.

Does an Apostille automatically validate my translation?

No. Identify whose signature is being authenticated and what translator qualifications the recipient accepts. You may also need a translation of the authentication certificate. Obtain the recipient’s instructions before commissioning translation.

Can a foreign-issued document be apostilled in Thailand?

Normally you should first check the competent authority in the document’s country of origin. A certified copy or a new certificate created in Thailand is a different document from the foreign original, and its acceptability must be checked with the recipient.

What if my birth record and passport use different names?

Identify the discrepancy and ask the recipient what connecting evidence it requires, such as a name-change certificate where applicable. Do not alter a translation to hide a mismatch in the original. Establish whether a corrected source record or supporting evidence is needed.

How do I check an Apostille’s authenticity?

Use the issuing authority’s official verification method or e-Register where available. Check that the record matches the document, rather than trusting an unexplained seal or QR code. Authenticity verification does not remove the recipient’s other requirements.
